5 Tips to Revive Sex After 50

Feeling old and like you’ve lost your sexual spark? We hear you and we see you.

Thinking you need to have the vibrant spark of a 20-year-old in order to have great sex is probably what’s keeping you stuck. But the truth is, once menopause has finished wreaking havoc over our bodies, it’s up to us as older, mature women to create that spark on our own.

It’s amazing how quickly we dismiss our sexuality as we age.sex-after-50

If this sounds like you, vibrant sex after menopause is possible and we are here to point you in the right direction, build your confidence and harness the inner 20-year-old that lives within.

Contrary to what society has conditioned you to believe, women over 50 still have sexual desires. Women still highly value sex, even as they get older, and it’s not abnormal to think this way.

However, for some women sex can be a little more challenging due to hormonal and physical changes in their bodies. But with some accommodations women over 50 can still have a great sex life!

If you feel disconnected from your sexuality, here are 5 best practices to revive your sex life after 50:

1. Maintain sexual health

There are multiple things older women can do to maintain sexual health, and heighten sexual desire.

And we all value good health, don’t we?

So, in the name of building positive and healthy habits overall as we age, make sure to also include: regular exercise, drinking water, having an intimate conversation (with a partner or close friend), building trust in your body by committing to your healthy habits, playing with sex toys, exploring your hot spots, sex talk, writing sexy letters, reading sexy literature and fueling your body with good quality, nutritious food.

It’s also important to do your Kegels! (What are Kegels?  See our Kegel blog post for more info)

2. Educate Yourself

Have you ever looked at your own vagina?  Do you know the exact spot that triggers pleasure?  What’s the difference between your Vulva and Clitoris?

If you don’t know the answers to these questions… you are not alone.

In fact, most women have bypassed sexual education for themselves and have focused on pleasing their partners instead.  Well, it’s time to take your power back and learn how you can turn yourself on (and communicate this to your partner).

3.    Make time for sex.

Ok… we realize this will take some work.  Change in any form requires effort. Add it to your to-do list, mark in on your calendar, set an alarm…

Draw a sexy bath, put on a sexy pair of underwear, or piece of clothing that feels good on your body…  Play some sexy music while you cook dinner… kiss your partner for an extra 5 seconds.  Remember, sex doesn’t necessarily mean intercourse.  It means to have sexual connection, stimulation and intimacy.

Be intentional. Be mindful.  Add a little “twist” into your general daily routine and find out where it leads…

4. Use it or lose it?

The idea of “a body in motion tends to stay in motion, and a body at rest tends to stay at rest”.  It’s true…the key to keeping a healthy sex life is by staying sexually active!

Some experts say that if you don’t use it, you will lose it…

However, for all you ladies over 50 who have not exercised your sexual muscles in years… there is still hope.

Start exploring and building trust in your body with safe and fun stimulation. You can always always always change… Sex and self pleasure is always available.

Practice makes the wheels turn and will build body confidence.

5. Masturbation

Masturbation is a great way to keep your sex life alive. It’s an exciting and fun way to reconnect with your body.  Adding a toy is an option we highly recommend.  If you have mobility concerns, finding the right toy is essential. Masturbate to explore.  Masturbate to connect to yourself.  Masturbate to have fun and experience self-pleasure.  Masturbate to light the fire in your relationships.  Masturbate to build confidence and sexual empowerment.  Masturbate for exercise. Masturbate for relaxation and mental wellness.

The end goal doesn’t need to always be a mind blowing orgasm (although we love those), it can become a healthy habit that contributes to longevity and overall happiness.
