You are Never Too Old for Good Sex!

Interest in sex doesn’t end because you turn a certain age. A mysterious shroud doesn’t come over your vulva as a big clock ticks in the air and goes ding – that’s it, you had a good run! For sure, it may take a little longer and you may have to have a little more patience but for a significant number of women, they still enjoy sex well into their eighties. And I mean enjoy! A lot! And at our age, we certainly have learned patience as part of our wisdom.

A positive mindset, a bottle of lube and your hands and or a toy, (I highly recommend both ?) and you are all set to go.

A friend of mine a few years back was listening to a couple of her daughter’s friends, and they were talking about toys and orgasms and all those good things that are much more common day conversations now. She turned and said, “I guess those days are behind us”. I looked around to see who she was talking to and realized it was me. I was speechless because not only was she younger than me, but I also was wondering why she would think that was true for either of us.

Interest in sex doesn’t simply end – you may get out of practice though, the same way you don’t eat right sometimes or forget to or don’t want to exercise 3 times a week.

Sex is good for your health, your skin, your mental state, it burns up tons of calories and it is just plain fun. It’s all-around important to your well-being.

Surprisingly contrary to what many young people and obviously the sex toy world think, numerous studies have indicated that older adults are having sex and plenty of it. And they are supplementing their lovemaking with toys.

In an ongoing study conducted by Dr Pepper Schwartz, 60% of women indicated that adult toys have been or are part of their lovemaking over the age of 50.

Why is that? and what do we know about those of us that have a vulva and a clitoris?

One of the things we know is that there are more than 8,000 nerve ends in the tip of the clitoris alone. That’s double the number of those in a penis. A clitoris is made up of 18 distinct parts – a mixture of erectile tissue, muscle, and nerves. These pieces are working together to create those amazing sensations that anyone with a clitoris feels when they’re having orgasms.

We also know that not all women can have an orgasm through intercourse alone and need external stimulation. The percentage of those numbers ranges from 10% to 25%, depending on the study. This is where toys help close the gap.

There are as many sex toys available in the market today as there is imagination. It’s often difficult to decide which one will work for you but the same way we buy other things for how we feel, we will come to understand that depending on our mood that day, that is the toy we will want to use.

For example, wand vibrators offer vibrations at a higher revolution per minute so they’re more intense and greater for individuals who have difficulty getting fully aroused without intense stimulation. Clitoral vibrators are either smaller tip shapes or air pressure suction toys and are intended for individuals who like direct clitoral stimulation. Another example is dildos which are meant to simulate penile penetration.  A final example is a combo of an internal vibrator and a G-spot toy. It has an external part that usually looks like rabbit ears that provides vibration to the clitoris, while a second attachment goes inside the vagina for G-spot stimulation.

Regardless of what toy you chose, think about what will work for you. Although the industry doesn’t market specifically to mature women, some specialized shops do. One of my favorites is bloomsexually.com. They cater to ladies like us – relevant, active, and still getting our groove on.
